MARKETING STUDY ABOUT ADVERTISING : THE RESULTS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We were contacted by the marketing and communication department of PEUGEOT, the French car manufacturer, and asked to carry out a marketing study about advertising in general. As a matter of fact, the company wants to create a very effective advertising campaign for its new model, the PEUGEOT 207. The objective is to target consumers as efficiently as possible. This study will enable the company to choose the most effective means of advertising.
INTRODUCTION
This report will look at :
- the views of consumers about advertising
- advertising and consumption habits
This survey is based on a sample of 15 students, male and female, between 20 and 24 year-old. The survey was administrated on the Internet, on the website www.surveymonkey.com.
FINDINGS
1. As regards the answers of the respondents to the study, 87% agree with the fact that TV advertising is the most eye-catching kind of advertising. The second most attractive kind of advertising is advertising in print, with 53% of the responses. The third and the fourth, outdoor and point of sale advertising, are almost equal with each 33%. According to the respondents, the least attractive kind of advertising is the one which is aired on the radio.
2. Views about advertising are relatively diversified : 26.7% of the respondents enjoy ads and find them entertaining, whereas another 26.7% think that advertising is a good way to make people think. At the same time, 26.7% of the respondents think that advertising is brainwashing.
3. Most respondents, 57.1%, think that the huge amounts of money invested by companies in advertising is money well-used, allowing to sustain economic growth. However, another 28.6% of the respondents reckon that it is too much, and that it could be used otherwise.
4. 100% of the respondents say that, to arouse their interest in a product, an advertising campaign should have a humorous tone ; 73.3% say that the advertising campaign should be surprising whereas 53.3% say that the ad should strike the imagination.
5. Concerning a limitation of advertising in general, 53% of the respondents are in favour of such measure, whereas 47% are against. If we look at the answers more in details, we can see that the respondents are in favour of a limitation on TV advertising (79%) and on radio advertising (71%). At the same time, they do not feel like it could be necessary to limit advertising in print, outdoor and on the point of sale.
6. Two third of the respondents say that during the advertising break, they change channels. Another 26.7% keep on watching the commercials.
7. The advertising campaigns that caught the most the eye of the respondents are the adverts for the information numbers : “118 218”, “118 008”… Another advertising campaign that caught the eye of a few respondents is the ad for the Citroën C4. These advertising campaigns are often quoted because they have a humorous tone, or because they are surprising.
8. Only 13.3% of the respondents think that advertising has a great impact on their consumption habits, whereas 6.7% explain that advertising makes them want to try all the new products that are marketed. However, 80% of the respondents think advertising influences their consumption only for a few products. Indeed they buy in general the same products.
CONCLUSION
TV Advertising is the most effective means of communication to arouse the interest of the consumer in the product. Views about advertising are diversified : some people enjoy ads, some do not, and some people think advertising makes people think. The huge amounts of money invested in advertising are for most people money well-used.To arouse the interest of the consumer of the product, an ad should mainly have a humorous tone, be surprising, and strike the imagination. Another important piece of information is that during the advertising break, most people change channels. Besides, they are in favour of a limitation on advertising, especially on television and on the radio. Finally, the respondents explain that their consumption habits are not that influenced by advertising.
RECOMMENDATION
We should have a meeting with the marketing and communication staff members of PEUGEOT as soon as possible in order to discuss their current media plan. At first glance, it seems that PEUGEOT has an interest in advertising mostly on television, in the press and outdoor. As a matter of fact, TV and the press are the most eye-catching kinds of advert. At the same time, outdoor advertising is a good way to arouse the interest of the consumer in the product, so people driving their cars in the city could see posters. Finally, PEUGEOT can advertise on the point of sale.

There is something (un)human inside…
Hi everybody !
Over the past few months, you have probably seen several commercials showing cars acting like human beings. The things is that these ads are very surprising. As a matter of fact, we saw a car dancing on a parking (the Citroën C4), a child growing and becoming a man who finally transforms himself as a car (the new Renault Clio). These two ones are pretty cool. Click on the following links to watch these commercials :
-CITROEN C4 (on the website of Citroën, click on "SEE THE TV AD" at the bottom of the page, on the left)
At the same time, there are commercials that show the dark side of the car. That is what FORD does with its KA. The slogan of these ads is : "The Ka's evil twin". These two commercials are broadcasted on TV only in United Kingdom. They are rather hard for the audience because the car kills a pigeon, and a car. I let you watch the ads to see the way the car acts.
- KA & CAT
Just in case you would not have seen it, in the second commercial, the cat has the head cut… I do not know if this commercial will be very effective, especially with people who are in favour of the protection of animals. Let's hope everybody will understand this is a joke and no human being neither pet has been hurt.
So with these four commercials, we can easily see that the car becomes more and more human. Our cars are indeed more and more "intelligent", thanks to very sophisticated electronical systems. Let's hope it won't turn as in the commercial for the FORD KA !
Have a nice day !

A very weird commercial : what’s the message ???
Hi everybody !
I was surfing on the Internet when I found the following commercial. You will see… A woman is in her car, with a young boy who is certainly not her husband. Up to this point, everything is allright. But we can see after a few seconds, that she joins her husband, who is in his own car too. So the woman hide the young boy… The end is very surprising, I let you watch it.

I don't get the message the brand tries to convey through this commercial. I thought the objective of a commercial was to arouse the interest of the consumer for the product. This commercial may be very funny (even if some people maybe schocked). However, it does absolutely not strike my imagination and won't lead me to buy a car from this brand (Hyundaï). The only thing we may think about this ad is that the marketing staff members from Hyundaï are a little bit pervert.
Let me know what you think about this commercial if you want.
Have a nice day !

The Hummer is a little monster…
Hi everybody !
I was surfing on the Internet when I found a very interesting commercial about the 4X4 Hummer. This is a very surprising advert… You should see this one !
Clik on the following link : http://www.1001-videos.com/video-out.php?id=113
The message this commercial conveys is that the Hummer is a very good car with the character of a monster, like its “parents” are ! But don’t be scared, Godzilla and the robot are not working for the company who built that car. You can buy one without being afraid of what could happen !
I wish you will enjoy this commercial !

When Renault makes the transition between the Clio II & the Clio III…
Hi everybody !
I found a few other commercials about the Renault Clio. These commercials are based on the second generation of the car (remember, the first was launched in 1990, the second in March 1998 and the third in September 2005). These adverts show owners of the second generation of the car who are explaining that they have improved their Clio…
The message Renault convey through these ads is that to improve the second generation of the car, which was by the way already a good car, the best way is to create a new one.
You can watch these commercials at the following address : www.jaiamelioremaclio.com. I prefer the one with the lady and E.T., but the other are quite funny too.
Have fun !

New Renault Clio : Twice the Va Va Voom
Hi everybody !
For a few month, you have probably seen the TV commercial for the new Clio in France. This commercial is currently broadcasted in different countries all over the world. It shows phantoms of old cars, searching for a new body (that is to say another car) to reincarn themselves.
Click on the link below to watch the ad in its international version (on a Spanish website) : CLIO REINCARNATION (Pay attention, to download the file you should click on the red Spanish written phrase at the top of the page)
So what do you think about it ? At first glance, this ad is not that original. The message Renault tries to convey through this advert is that there is no other car like this one, this is the best : “Not every car is born a Clio”. In my view, this commercial is far less original than those of the 1990’s. But Renault counts too on the capital of sympathy of the previous versions.
Click on the links below to watch one of the first commercial for the Clio (click on “MPEG“) : CLIO 1992 ; CLIO 1993
These adverts were in my view a bit more original than those we can see on our screens today. However, Renault has launched a new advertising campaign after the Clio has been elected “Car of the Year 2006″.
At the same time, taking into account cultural diversity, Renault has launched differents advertising campaign in United Kingdom, in Belgium, in Spain… I really enjoy these commercials, especially the British one…
- in Great Britain
- the website : www.vavavoom.co.uk ;to watch the commercial & its making-of , enter the site and click on one of the six little symbol at the bottom of the screen, on the right… there is one named “watch TV”
- in Belgium
- the website : www.renault.be ; the commercial : CLIO ENTER NEXT LEVEL
- in Spain
- the website : www.publitv.com (Spanish website) ; the commercial : CLIO RESTART (to download the file, click on the red Spanish written phrase at the top of the page)
Maybe there are other commercials about the new Renault Clio…I am still searching for it. If you find something that could be interesting, please, let me know. I wish you enjoyed these commercials. Let me know what you think about it.
Have a nice day !

Cars and Advertising… for pleasure and optimism !
Hi everybody !
My name is Nicolas. I am 21, almost 22 (in a few weeks…). I study in the Normandy Management School, in Le Havre (76), in France. In the near future, my project is to work in the sector of Human Resources. As a kid, I was very far away from thinking that one day I would do such job… As a matter of fact, I formerly wanted to be a designer, and I wanted to work in the car industry for brands like Renault, PSA, BMW…
As you would have certainly understood it, I am very interested in cars. Maybe you wonder why I did not try to become a designer ? Well, it’s simple : I thought that if I had to work for one brand in particular, I would have felt guilty to watch and to buy any other car from another brand ! Moreover, I am pretty sure I would never have manage to choose for which brand I would be working… No I am just kidding ! I don’t really know the reason why I did not continue in this way. But there is one thing for sure, I am happy in my life today !
So let’s talk about cars and advertising !
Nowadays, cars are very important in our lives. This is our way of life. As a matter of fact, most people use their cars to go to work, to go on a holiday, to travel, in their free time to visit the countryside or to go to the seaside, to go to the place where they have their leisure activities, to go to the supermarket… In a way, we can say that cars are almost everywhere. And sometimes, I am angry because I can’t park mine !
However, the future of our cars is unsure and threatend because of the lack of oil, and because of pollution… Of course, these are two very important things, but this is no reason for being pessimitic ! I am confident about the future. Engineers are currently working on less polluting vehicles, and on a new kind of engines, using less oil or other energies.
Waiting for these evolutions, here is a blog which objectives are to make people a bit more optimisitic about cars through advertising, and of course, to make them laugh. You may read too comments about the new commercials or ads you can see on TV or in the press.
I wish you will enjoy this blog !
Nicolas
